The 12th 'BFSU-WANHUIDA Cup' Intellectual Property Moot Court Competition successfully held

In order to promote the internationalization of Chinese intellectual property cause, to respond to the new situation of China's strategy of rejuvenating China through science and technology, Beijing Foreign Studies University, the Intellectual Property Tribunal of the Supreme People's Court and WANHUIDA IP Agency jointly sponsored “BFSU-WANHUIDA” Intellectual Property Moot Court Competition in 2007. Now it is jointly held by law school of Beijing Foreign Studies University and WANHUIDA IP Agency. It is the 12th session this year. Over the past 12 years, nearly 20 domestic and foreign teams and more than 1000 students have argued hot cases in terms of patents, trademarks and copyrights. This competition is the only international English-speaking IP Moot Court Competition in China. The competition has promoted internationalization of China intellectual property law, attracted young talented people to understand and get familiar to intellectual property system of China. The moot court has gradually established widespread influence domestically and overseas, and become an annual big event of intellectual property circles.
The 12th 'BFSU-WANHUIDA' Intellectual Property Moot Court competition was successfully held between May 25 and 26, 2019 at the Japan Research Center of BFS. At the opening ceremony on May 25th, hosted by Prof. Wan Meng of BFSU law school, Prof. Jia Dezhong, vice president of Beijing Foreign Studies University, Ms. Song Yushui, vice President and deputy chief judge of Beijing Intellectual Property Court, vice president of the All-China Woman’s Federation, Mr. Li Sen, senior partner of WANHUIDA IP Agency, attended the opening ceremony with their warm speeches and praised the contribution of the competition to the development of intellectual property system domestically and internationally, expressed their high hopes for the future development of the competition.








 12 Chinese and foreign teams participated in the competition this year. They are teams from University of Toledo of the United States, Soochow University of Taiwan, China University of Political Science and Law, East China University of Political Science and Law, Zhongnan University of Economics and Law, Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing Normal University, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, Fudan University, China Foreign Affairs University, Changchun University of Science and Technology, and Beijing Foreign Studies University.





This year’s case involves patent equivalent infringement and the doctrine of estoppel, which requires comparison of technical features and is very difficult to describe and argue. In the two-day competition, after fierce competition of the preliminary, semi-finals and finals, Beijing Foreign Studies University won the championship, China University of Political Science and Law won the runner-up, East China University of Political Science and Law and Beijing University of Chemical Technology won the second runner-up. China University of Political Science and Law, Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing University of Chemical Technology won the best memo. Zhao Yiming from China University of Political Science and Law, and Zha Rulin of East China University of politics and law, Wang Yanchao from Beijing University of Chemical Technology, Wang Zhaoyu of Beijing Foreign Studies University won the best oralists.







At the closing ceremony, hosted by Prof. Liu Lijuan of BFSU IP Centre, Prof. Yan Dong, Deputy dean of BFSU law school and Mr. Li Jiang, senior partner of WANHUIDA congratulations to all winners. Ms. Zhang Xiaojin, representing judges of the moot court, gave very insightful and professional speech. Ms. Zha Rulin, as a representative of competitors, expressed their thanks to the judges and coaches.







The competition has kept the high standard as always, and all competitors have shown the high level of professional and language ability. Foreign teams also showed their keen interest and in-depth understanding of China's intellectual property system. At the closing ceremony of the competition, representatives of judges, coaches, and competitors gave their suggestions and appreciations.
